Power BI Gateways

An On-premise gateway is required to connect to data within your corporate infrastructure/ domain which will allow the Power BI service to connect and run queries from either a Dataflow or Dataset.

The gateway infrastructure uses the Azure Service Bus to securely transmit data into Microsoft cloud services:

Setting up the gateway requires three steps:

  • Step 1: Download and Install the gateway on the server in your domain
  • Step 2: Configure the gateway on the server
  • Step 3: Configure the gateway on Power BI service (create data source, add users)

Ideally you want the gateway to be on the largest data source or on a server very near i.e. not on another sub domain etc.

You can download the gateway from Power BI Gateway | Microsoft Power BI

Note: there are 2 types of gateway – Standard or Personal.

A personal gateway is for a user to connect to their local files and data sources when their machine is on, whereas a standard gateway is designed for organisational use i.e. connecting to corporate resources on an “always-on” server so that data refreshes to Production databases happen during downtime to ensure performance.
